Tile Projects

Tile work can be a beautiful way to revamp a space in your home. The design or color of the tile can accent an area. Designing an eye-catching layout of tiles may also be a way to create a statement throughout a room. Many different materials comprise the term "tile."

Pick the Perfect Fit

Tiles may be ceramic, stone, porcelain, or glass. Those are just a few of the options you can readily find on the market. Not all materials will be appropriate for every project. When researching what tiles to use, pay attention to the environment for the tile project. Bathrooms, for instance, will need tiles rated for exposure to high levels of moisture. Entryway and kitchen floors will need to be very durable in those high-traffic areas. Tile work that is more decorative as in a backsplash or alcove may be less about function and more about design. Some materials can be glazed or sealed to help with durability. Others are only decorative in nature and useful just in places where somewhat protected.

Inspired Creativity

Choosing the size and shape of the tile may be fun and exciting with so many unique and creative tiles on the market. Research current design ideas that may appeal to your style. Many new-construction model homes can give you great inspiration. Home improvement stores have design centers where you can look, touch, and ask your questions about any tile project you have in mind. Remember, however, that if you are not living in your forever-home, a final product that is too unique may be a detraction when putting your home on the market.

Holding it all

Together The grout that holds your tiles in place is another thing to research. Grout comes in many colors, and so you should include it as part of the design element. Most of the grout you see will be visually neutral to the overall tiling project. Most of the time you will see a grey or white grouting. Other color grout options add a more unique, creative finished product. Or check out some of the new groutless tile projects available.

Take your Time

Planning a tile project takes careful measurements. You may want to sketch it out on graph paper a couple of different times to triple check measurements and math calculations. These types of projects are a significant investment, and incorrect measurements can cause costly mistakes. Tiling projects will require patience and time.
